Names, Spirits and Monsters[]
- Biedde: A Name of the Colonel, in some accounts said to be a surgeon-highwayman from the 18th century. His name may be the bastardisation of the word “mosquito” in Arabic, and his blade is able to cause grievous wounds that do not stop bleeding until healed.[1]
- Burgeoning Risen: A type of risen corpse who are renewed by the Ring-Yew and sustained by the growths of the Wood.[2]
- Caligine: Smokey children of the Forge which gather in the Bounds. A Caligine is a creature of cunning vapor formed when the Glory’s fire meets baser elements.[3][4]
- Chione: A mysterious spirit known for her nine years in Abydos, where she turned the city into “a place of slow death, frosty ecstasy and silent beauty”, before conspirators break the silence and let in a scarred man (almost certainly the Colonel) to drag Chione out and allow Summer to return.[5] It was speculated that Chione is an identity of the Madrugad or the Snow, or one of their Names. A somewhat tangential source reveals that she's indeed the Snow's Name. [6]
- Coelle: A flower-girl whose corpse washed up on the shores of Port Noon after she drowned herself. She is a Name of the Wolf, likely due to being consumed by despair and “unmaking” herself.[7]
- Crooky: A Name of the Beachcomber, that keeps secrets that could result in war between the Hours.[8]
- Eskhara-Meligounis: The Lady of Veils, a strange Name who might have once served the Twins, as it's unclear if they are two or one. Eskhara is associated with burns, and Meligounis with healing, and one or both are patrons and guardians to the Invisible Serapeum and Alexandria as a whole. She can be summoned in The Lady Afterwards.[10]
- Ezeem, the Second Thirstly: A Name-emanation of the Grail who has flirted with the Forge, and who can be summoned in Cultist Simulator.[11]
- Hints: Once dead spirits drawn into the Mansus, Hints now act as subtle and vicious killers. They prefer to dwell behind mirrors and out of sight, as the gaze of a living mortal would destroy them.[12]
- Histids: A category of servants belonging to the Colonel, who appear to use darts made from skaptodon’s teeth, a technique they taught to the Tragulari. [13][14]
- Ivories, Thirstlies and Lovelies: Names which serve the Red Grail and can be found in the Red Church, where they speak, feast, and birth new desires.[15]
- King Crucible: A Name-emanation of the Forge of Days, who in the Wake takes a form similar to that of a living flame. The Ordo Limiae, who were required to hide themselves from the world, would summon King Crucible as a last resort to punish those who broke this oath, though they did so with caution since it could draw the Forge’s attention.[16][17]
- Labhites: The youngest of the Lionsmith's servants, known for their potency and beauty. Where skaptodons must eat things from the earth, labhites can only consume things from the sky, or else they lose their power. One corrupted by Echidna’s milks can be encountered in the Exile Legacy in the form of a human.[18]
- Maids-in-the-Mirror: The Dead who pass the test of the Ascent of Knives enter the service of the Sun-in-Rags through the Peacock Door. They are said to favor orchids, and in the Apostle Entheate Legacy assist in gathering Witnesses. Although primarily associated with Winter, Maids-in-the-Mirror are said to possess a "keen cruelty", and their birthplace, the Ascent of Knives, is notoriously agonizing to traverse.[19][20][21]
- Menhit: A Nubian war goddess, who was also a lioness-goddess. She can be encountered in the Exile Legacy at the Lionsmith’s shrines, where she may provide a revelation.[22]
- Miss Naenia: The gentlest of the Elegiast’s Names, who can be encountered both in the Dancer Legacy and, more prominently, in the Ghoul Legacy, where she inhabits a painting bearing her name and guides the player on their path of Remembrance. She is described as a “dark-skinned woman with snow-coloured eyes and close-cropped ivory-coloured hair.[23]
- Old Mother Anguish: A Name of the Mother of Ants who had two children that became Names of the Twins, her daughter Daha and her son Ahad, a murderer child whose bones still lie in Kerisham.[24]
- Percussigants: Strange creatures of the Thunderskin which resemble headless, flapping bears who dance ceaselessly.[25]
- Quirinus: A Roman god sometimes considered to be the deified form of Rome's founder, Romulus. Quirinus is also used as an epithet of the two-faced god Janus. He is a Name of the Colonel that can be encountered in the Exile Legacy, wielding a two-headed spear and imparting wisdom upon the player.[26]
- Raw Prophets/Undergoers: Bewildering creatures of the Red Grail. A Raw Prophet is an alluring, flexible, half-formed tangle of limbs and body parts which desires to consume or be impregnated by mortals and speaks confusing prophecies.[27]
- Shattered Risen: A type of undead animated for a time by a rending force, raised from a corpse by the Colonel.[28]
- Singlefoot: One-footed, one-horned hill-children that live on the slopes of Mount Hua, close to the Grove of the Green Immortals. They reproduce by coercing pilgrims to enter the mountain, becoming singlefoots. Singlefoots have the power to conjure Earthquake Names by dreaming.[29][30]
- Skaptodons: A type of monster with feline characteristics made by the Lionsmith, who have a long lifespan and are hard to kill. The teeth and claws of fallen skaptodons are shaped into weapons by servants of the Lionsmith, and the Tragulari and Histids of the Colonel tip their darts with skaptodon teeth. A skaptodon that eats things not found in the earth will degenerate into a human-like form.[31]
- Striges: Also called Many-Winged Ones, striges are Edge Names who gather around fallen warriors, who they honor by consuming their flesh and bringing their souls to the Hours of the Corrivality. They can be encountered at shrines to both the Colonel and the Lionsmith which puts them in a strange position of serving two (or none) Hours at once.[32][33]
- Teresa Galmier/The Baldomerian: The author of the Locksmith’s Dream, who frequently spends time at the Lodge of the Sage-Knight. Her interest in the Pilgrimage, status as a Lantern-Long/Name, and lack of a shadow suggest she may be in the service of the Watchman. She is said to be something in the middle between a Name and Long.[34]
- The Amethyst Imago: Once the Imago was a Name of the Moth, who fell in love with Matthias, a Long of the House of Lethe. Though their passions were forbidden, the Imago had her wings cut off to remain with her beloved, and the two ultimately pledged themselves to the Forge to be transformed anew.[35]
- The Carapace Cross: The Carapace Cross are the predecessors to humanity, who worshiped the gods-from-stone. It is believed that the Moth himself was born from the Shearing, when they cut off their wings and hair and “passed within” humanity.[36]
- The Knotwingknot: A Name of the Moth with a nest of black silk and white hair in the Wood, which can be explored in the Exile Legacy as part of the quest to recruit Zulfiya.[37][9]
- The Merry Feaster: One of the Lionsmith’s less dignified works, a monster lurking in the sewers of Aachen and consuming drunks and soldiers. Lalla Chaima asks for the player’s assistance in hunting the beast in the Exile Legacy.[38]
- The Sage-Knight: A Name who’s once dwelled in a Lodge near the White Door before ascending further. He is a Name who apparently “knows the odd Ivory”, implying that he is in the service of the Red Grail himself, or at least associates with her servants.[39]
- Voiceless Dead: Spirits of the dead who have entered the Mansus by the White Door and lost their voice forever. They can be summoned back to the Wake for a time as silent servants to the living.[40]
- Wolf-Splinters: Prowling spirits of grey malice who are lesser Name-emanations of the Wolf Divided.[41]
- Younger Sisters: These great serpents are the younger sisters of the Mother of Ants, likely some form of offspring of the Seven-Coils. and can be found guarding many old tombs and forgotten locations.[42] Not so many of them are left in their serpent-form, they are known to take the human form as the world changes.[43]

- Antaios: A great enemy of the Lionsmith, known as Antaios the Opponent, the Son of Earth. The Lionsmith respects his great enemies, though, and so the initiates of the Antaeum, who revere the Lionsmith, also venerate Antaios. The player in the Exile Legacy and the Foe are both Antaeans, Blood of the Earth, which is said to mean a descent from the Flint and the Wheel as well, and the Exile’s mother was an initiate to the Antaeum.[46][47]
- Arun Peel: One of the Great Hooded Princes, who abandoned his lineage’s dedication to Knock for the Thunderskin’s teachings. Sulochana Amavasya is the daughter of one of the Princes.[85]
