'A Buzzing in the Brain'
Moth is one of the Principles of the invisible arts, named after the Moth himself. It is the wild aspect of the Wood, tied to chaos, yearning, and passion.[1]
Themes and Imagery[]
'A Barber's Warning'
Scissors, shaving, and haircutting are common symbols and themes of Moth, as representations of sacrificially transforming oneself; the removal of clothes and the shedding of skin serve a similar purpose.[2][3][4] The Principle is heavily focused on the metamorphosis of the self through surrender and loss, removing what is unnecessary until only the most basic and primeval remains. The aspect is also heavily tied to the natural world and wild-life, particularly insects such as moths and bees.[5][6]
As a Principle of insanity and instinct, the lessons and doctrines of Moth often seem confusing or erratic at first glance.[7][8] Generally these messages are meant to express a primal truth in the world, though they may also be applied to deceive, misdirect, or drive someone to madness.[9][10][11]
Though Moth is the Principle of the Wood, it also is one of the the aspects closest to Worms, who dwell in the shadowy realm of Nowhere below.[12]
Ascension[]
'The Door in the Wood'
In the Dancer DLC of Cultist Simulator, the player can choose to pursue the dances of the Old Form, the Moth variant of the Change Ascension.[13] This involves venturing out in various animal shapes to learn seven lessons of Change from the Hours, culminating in a final performance and sacrifice with the Forest Key held by Medusa to pass through the Door in the Wood.[14][15]
It is unclear however what exactly is the end result of this ascension. Rather than become a standard Long, the player transforms into a shape reminiscent of the Carapace Cross and ends up dwelling in the darkness of the Wood. Whether they have truly reverted from Humanity to the Cross, or if this is the form that Moth-Long usually take, is unknown.
Subversion[]
'Hunger is Folly'
In Cultist Simulator, Moth subverts Grail.[16] Both aspects have a connection to yearning and desire in some form, though the urges of Moth are often more primal and fundamental than those of Grail. The cycle of subversion also relates to the dispute regarding who the first
god-from-blood is, the Moth or the Red Grail.[17]
Moth itself is subverted by Lantern, the Principle of Reason, knowledge, and the Glory.[18] This reflects the Hour of the Moth’s yearning for the Glory, as well as the light of reason and higher thought overtaking base instinct.
Hours[]
'Mare-in-the-Yew'
- The Moth: One of the first gods-from-blood, the Moth himself is a wild Wood-Hour that stole the skin of the Wheel during the Lithomachy. His desire for the Glory is constant, for he is the Hour of chaos and yearning, of madness and passion.
- The Velvet: The Moth answers yes to the Glory, but the Velvet answers no. She is an old god of the earth, born when the Wood-roots tasted blood, and in the darkness of the Wood she remains, collecting her treasured secrets. She represents Moth as an Hour of concealment and obscurity.
- The Ring-Yew: Another Hour of the Wood, the Ring-Yew’s domains include restlessness and whimsy, and her own urges are difficult to control. She has secret, forbidden liaisons with the Mare-in-the-Tree, a god-from-Nowhere, but as Moth teaches, there is power in what is forbidden.
- The Witch-and-Sister/The-Sister-and-Witch: The Twins were born from two wombs, a princess and a monster, whose love united them even in death. The aspect of Moth is balanced between their two faces, as Hours of union and dissolution, witchcraft and healing, the Moon and the sea.
- The Vagabond: A rogue Hour barred from the Mansus, the Vagabond will be the first of the seven to partake in the Pilgrimage to the Glory, and until then she will explore the rest of existence. She is a mischievous Moth Hour of wanderlust and journeys.
- The Wheel (?): Before the Moth stole its skin, the Wheel was a god-from-stone and the Hour of eternal change, its involutions infinite. Though it has passed from our world, the power of the Wheel has been divided and inherited not only by the Moth, but also the Thunderskin and perhaps the Velvet.
Other Entities and Followers[]
'The Vision of the Shearing'
- The Amethyst Imago: Once the Imago was a Name of the Moth, who fell in love with Matthias, a Long of the House of Lethe. Though their passions were forbidden, the Imago had her wings cut off to remain with her beloved, and the two ultimately pledged themselves to the Forge to be transformed anew.[19]
- The Knotwingknot: A Name of the Moth with a nest of black silk and white hair in the Wood, which can be explored in the Exile Legacy as part of the quest to recruit Zulfiya.[20][21]
- Burgeoning Risen: A type of risen corpse who are renewed by the Ring-Yew and sustained by the growths of the Wood.[22]
- The Carapace Cross: The Carapace Cross are the predecessors to humanity, who worshiped the gods-from-stone. It is believed that the Moth himself was born from the Shearing, when they cut off their wings and hair and “passed within” humanity.[23]
- Sulochana Amavasya: The owner of the Ecdysis Club and a member of the Ligeia Club, who can assist the player during their pursuit of the Change ascensions, particularly the Old Form. She herself followed the steps of the Old Form up to a point, but ultimately entered the Mansus through another path.[24][25]
- Zulfiya Zakirova: A member of the Bird-Eaters, a group of criminal adepts opposed to the laws of the Wake and the Mansus. She is an old associate of the Exile "turned strange", and can be recruited as an ally from Stalingrad.[26]
